It was an admirable effort from the second unit, but one that ultimately came up short. Needing a win to even have a shot at advancing, MFC Judge's battle against group leaders SCA Grande Île ended in a scoreless draw Monday night.
Playing on the road, MFC Judge had a chance just two minutes into the match - but that effort was cleared off the line by poweful centerback Maurice Beauvais. The home side would have several more chances over the next few minutes, but those chances were either off-target or blocked. MFC Judge would attempt to strike back, but were simply unable to do so.
The second half was more of the same - each side moving the ball, each side attempting to score, but each side ultimately failing. Just like a midget attempting to dunk on a ten-foot hoop, all of those attempts came up short.
The only person who really enjoyed the match was the grandmother of backup striker Patryk Rutkowski. Flying in from Rutkowski's native Poland, Meemaw was overjoyed to see her favorite descendant take the pitch. "I loved seeing him run around" she told a reporter after the match "Even if he didn't score, even if I still have the same number of goals this year as him, just seeing him out there brought warmth to my cold heart."
"I am proud of how the boys played today" manager Pieter van der Linden said. "We knew prospects for qualifying were slim, so we deicded to prepare for the return to league play. Many of the boys that were out there today may not play much, but they fought today. They fought for the badge, and there's not much more you can ask than that."
This draw, combined with Park Street Maple FC's loss means that MFC Judge's IMFF Cup run is now done. All focus now shifts to the remaining Bronze League schedule.
