It's not over yet, but after Sunday afternoon's loss to Park Street Maple FC, the door is almost shut on MFC Judge's hopes of advancing out of the group stage of the IMFF Elites Cup. In what was a must-win match, MFC Judge came up short, falling to the Swedish powerhouse 3-1..
As bad as things got for the home side, they actually started off well. In the 14th minute forward Elmar Jacobs received a pass from Jean-Claude Schoeters, used his magical first touch to control it, and then quickly hit a rocket across the face of the goal and into the back of the net to give MFC Judge a 1-0 lead.
That lead would be short-lived, however. In the 27th minute the vistitors won a corner, Agnaldo Peres hit a sublime ball, and Sebastian Marczewski pounded it in to even the match at a goal a piece. That is how the match would end - all tied up.
Just like a Park Street Maple corner hurt MFC Judge in the first half, one would inflict similar pain in the second. This time it was Onno Bot in the 64th minute to Jamel Abbasi, with the same result - a goal. It was just a minute later that the visitors would extend their lead, with Patrick Deroo slotting a ball to Marczewski, who then notched his second of the match to bring the margin to how it would end - 3 to 1.
"We need to get better at set-pieces" defender Vanderlei Felix said. "Set pieces killed us today. We do better on those and could very well have turned out differently."
Manager Pieter van der Linden, assistant Kwame Asante and the rest of the staff now have a decision to make. WIth. the club's next cup match against group leaders SCA Grande Île, the club not only needs to win there but also needs Park Street Maple FC to defeat Los Angeles METASQUAD. Do MFC Judge go for the win or do they rotate and focus on league play? That is the question on everyone's mind.
