After a frustrating night in Kyiv, MFC Judge had a much more successful, satisfying night in Brussels, coming out victorious, scoring two goals and keeping a clean sheet. And even better than the win is the fact that the victory puts the boys from Deventer atop the table - at least for the moment.
"Tonight was an all-around performance - the sort we aim to put forth every time we take the pitch. This is a long season, one that we know will have ups and downs," manager Pieter van der Linden told reporters after the match. "For tonight though, we are happy. It is now about building on this performance and making sure it is the norm rather than the exception. Brussels MFC is a good opponent. We did well today."
The match started off quickly, with Brussels MFC defender Hans Rupp picking up a yellow-card just thirty-three seconds into the match. He wasn't the only one behaving badly though, as Vicente Pardo, manning the center of the pitch in place of a resting Jean-Claude Schoeters, picked one up just a few minutes later.
Things took a turn for the better shortly thereafter, however, as winger Krunoslav Marušić received a pass from striker Jamie Thornton on the wing, overpowered his defender, and slotted one to give MFC Judge the lead. It was a beautiful sequence from two players who may not be playing as much as they like - but who inevitably contribute whenever they have a chance. Thornton had chances himself to score in both the 23rd and 29th minutes, but was unable to convert.
The second half got off to an even faster start than the first. Less than a minute after exiting the Metastadium's luxurious locker rooms - and after receiving a relaxing Swedish massage from assistant Kwame Asante, Elmar Jacobs scored the visitors' second goal of the match off an assist from Tunde Sanusi.
That 2-0 scoreline is how the match would end. The result puts MFC Judge atop the table and keeps the club undefeated on the young Bronze League season.
